Homeowners 'go online for mortgages'

Mon 7 Jan 2008 4pm

A growing number of British property owners and buyers are using the internet to arrange a mortgage, new research has suggested.

The survey by Yorkshire Building Society states that 79 per cent of people would consider making a mortgage application online in the future, with 60 per cent stating that searching the internet is the best way to find property information.

Many people are not prepared to rely completely on technology for their mortgage however, with 56 per cent saying that they would like to talk to an individual at some stage of the application.

Commenting on the appeal of the internet for home loan applicants, editor of Your Mortgage Pauline McCallion said: "The size and complexity of the current mortgage market means it is sensible for consumers to use the internet to help find the best deal for their needs.

"With the range of tools and calculators now available online, those looking for a mortgage can conduct their own research and will often find competitive offers online."

A recent survey by Alliance & Leicester International claimed that 92 per cent of expatriates now access banking services on the internet.
