Brits 'borrowing freely'

Mon 17 Dec 2007 4pm

Personal debt levels are increasing in the UK because the "stigma" attached to borrowing money is vanishing, it has been claimed.

Spokesperson for PayPal Cristina Hoole said that the act of acquiring a loan, whether from an authorised lender, friend or family member, is now much more accepted among British people.

Ms Hoole stated that the typical British consumer is most likely to ask their mother to lend them some money, although many people will freely borrow from their friends as well.

Speaking about the changing attitudes towards borrowing, she commented: "I don't think there's a stigma anymore.

"The key thing is that if you do borrow money or if you lend money, that shouldn't affect the relationship that you have with that person."

According to a recent report from YouGov and PayPal, 48 per cent of UK people have lent money to their family and friends in the last 12 months.

PayPal is an online payments service which allows the secure transfer of money over the internet.
