British consumers are planning to borrow a whopping £1.4 billion in the pursuit of perfection, according to a new study.
A poll by Abbey Loans discovered that nearly one million British adults are planning to borrow cash to fund plastic surgery, with breast augmentation topping the wish list of cosmetic procedures for 27 per cent of Brits, followed by tummy tucks (25 per cent) and rhinoplasty, or nose jobs, with 17 per cent.
The favourite destination for Brits heading outside the UK to seek plastic surgery bargains is eastern Europe (six per cent), while two per cent of those going under the knife head to the home of cosmetic surgery, the United States.
Paul Morrish, head of Abbey Loans, commented: "Whether striving for visible perfection or as part of a medical treatment, plastic surgery is getting more and more popular amongst Britons. We are seeing an increase in requests to borrow for plastic surgery."
Major reasons given for choosing to alter their appearance among respondents to the survey were gaining more confidence (51 per cent), medical purposes (32 per cent) and to stop people teasing them (one per cent)
Although two-thirds of those opting for plastic surgery are women, procedures are becoming increasingly popular among male patients, with nearly 2,500 cosmetic surgery procedures carried out on men by members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons in 2006.
