Survey uncovers lack of insurance among UK homeowners

Wed 23 Jan 2008 2pm

New research has revealed that many British people are failing to protect their homes by not taking out insurance policies.

According to findings from Nationwide, 20 per cent of the nation's homeowners do not have any buildings insurance and are taking major risks in the event of flood or fire damage.

The survey also found that an additional 14 per cent are currently without contents cover for their properties, suggesting that many people are putting their personal items in similar danger.

"It is surprising that so many people are prepared to take such a gamble on their homes and personal belongings, when you consider how much time and money we all invest in our homes, said Robin Bailey, insurance director at Nationwide.

"You never know what is around the corner and for that reason it is vital that people are prepared by having adequate insurance," he added.

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings this week, urging homeowners to be on their guard as heavy rain continues to fall around the UK.
