UK people 'need more life insurance'

The UK is currently "hugely underinsured" for
life cover, an industry expert has claimed.
Nick Kirwan, head of health and protection
insurance at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), said that many people do not currently take out the necessary
life insurance because there is not an "easy mechanism" for promoting such policies.
He stated that the large number of homeowners organising
life cover at the same time as a
mortgage is "of course a good thing", but said that people should be more aware of the need for
life insurance "when other events happen as well".
Mr Kirwan explained: "If people start a family, that's a time when the need for
life insurance particularly shoots up.
"Unfortunately, they don't take it out on those occasions as much as we think they should."
The membership of the ABI includes about 400 companies, accounting for 94 per cent of all
insurance products sold in the UK.
