Homeowners urged to make more safety checks

The nation's property owners are not safety-conscious enough, according to a new report from a UK insurer.
Findings from Legal & General reveal that, while many British people install safety devices in their homes, only a comparatively small proportion continue to monitor their effectiveness after they have been set up.
The survey discovered that 30 per cent of UK residents have a security alarm installed at their property, but over 50 per cent admitted to never checking whether or not it worked.
"It is clear that we need to improve awareness of the precautions and checks we all should take to protect our homes," said Elaine Parkes, head of technical services at Legal & General.
"A few simple checks could mean that our properties are safer and so avoid the need to make a claim under a household
insurance policy," she added.
Halifax Home Insurance recently advised Britons to prepare their properties for possible onslaughts of severe weather this month.
