Severe weather leads to warning for homeowners

An insurer has advised property owners to take precautions as the new year brings a spate of extreme weather conditions to the UK.
With areas of Scotland battered by heavy winds last night and further storms expected as January progresses, Halifax Home Insurance has urged householders to prepare for severe weather and avoid having to make a major
insurance claim.
According to the firm, property owners should secure any objects around the house that could become hazardous and trim low-hanging branches which could cause damage in the event of a storm, as well as keeping a home emergency kit on hand in case of power cuts and other unwanted situations.
Martyn Foulds, senior
claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance said: "With the average claim for storm damage costing around £1,000, it is advisable for homeowners to take preventative steps to reduce the risk of damage to their homes and also ensure they have adequate home
insurance cover in place."
Halifax also recommends that homeowners check the condition of their roof at least once a year and particularly after a period of stormy weather.
The Met Office has forecast that next week is likely to see severe gales across northern areas of the UK, with heavy rain expected in parts of western Scotland.
