Children 'cause damage worth millions'

Thu 20 Dec 2007 5pm

A new survey has revealed how expensive raising children can be for the nation's homeowners.

Research from Halifax Home Insurance states that the UK's toddlers have collectively caused damage totalling £122 million to their parents' houses over the last year.

A combination of spilt drinks, broken furniture and ornaments, and graffiti on walls can result in spiralling costs for those property owners, with the insurer advising those with children to invest in accidental damage cover as a result.

"Raising children is expensive enough without having to find additional money to replace items that small children have accidentally damaged," said Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance.

"Parents can protect themselves from the costs of home repairs and damaged contents by ensuring their home insurance includes accidental damage cover," he added.

Halifax Home Insurance recently urged homeowners not to leave their properties vulnerable to opportunistic thieves over the Christmas period.
