DIY homeowners 'need insurance'

Fri 7 Dec 2007 4pm

Property owners have been advised to take out accidental damage insurance before carrying out their own home renovations.

The British Insurance Brokers Association said that this type of insurance, which is usually an optional extra on normal buildings and contents policies, will cover "most DIY disasters".

Steve Foulsham, technical services officer for the organisation, said that accidental damage cover is "the important thing" for DIY homeowners, although he also advised that electrical work and other skilled tasks should be left to professionals.

Giving an example of the need for accidental damage insurance, Mr Foulsham said: "If you're doing some work and you put a drill through your wall and maybe hit the water pipe or something and get a lot of water damage as a result, then you would need accidental damage cover on your building for that claim to be paid."

According to a recent survey by insurance firm Zurich, one in five homeowners who admitted to cutting corners on their DIY work ended up paying a professional to fix their mistakes.
