An
insurance firm has urged people to think about their home security amid this year's festive celebrations.
Direct Line said that Christmas is a "good time" for property owners to enhance their domestic security levels, due to the high value of presents stored in homes and the increased activity of thieves during this period.
Andrew Lowe, head of home
insurance at the firm, advised householders to deter opportunistic burglars by installing "simple security devices" in the run-up to Christmas.
He added: "Most burglars are opportunists so it is important to be careful not to leave presents on display, near a window or all in one place like in a bedroom.
"Many burglaries occur when presents such as electrical goods are left in view of passers by."
According to a recent report from Liverpool Victoria, 68 per cent of UK homeowners leave valuable items such as televisions, computers and antiques on display.
