Homes 'need MOT for winter'

The nation's homeowners have been advised to carry out a "simple winter home MOT" to prepare their property for the cold weather.
According to Sainsbury's Home Insurance, people should make sure that their house is ready for the winter months in much the same way as motorists check the roadworthiness of their cars.
The insurer reminded homeowners that failure to properly look after their residence could mean that they are unable to make an
insurance claim in the event of some damage.
"With winter approaching the risk to homes from bad weather increases, but there is a lot that homeowners can do to reduce losses through the maintenance of their properties," said Steve Johnson, head of Sainsbury's Home Insurance.
The firm stated that giving a property a winter MOT involves checking areas which are often neglected by homeowners, such as roofs and chimneys.
According to a recent report by Scottish Widows, 72 per cent of this year's graduate homebuyers took out a joint
mortgage in order to get on the property ladder. A personal
loan can contribute to the cost of running a home.
