Christmas ID fraud warning issued

Fri 21 Dec 2007 3pm

Consumers have been urged to be particularly careful with their personal and financial details during the Christmas holiday period.

People are generally more vulnerable to identity theft during the festive period, according to CIFAS, because of the increased spending activity and "emotional extremes" which Christmas brings.

As a result, the UK fraud prevention service has issued a set of guidelines designed to help people prevent sensitive information from getting into the wrong hands.

CIFAS advises consumers to be vigilant of their bags, purses and wallets during the Christmas party season, as well as being extra careful when using credit or debit cards to buy goods.

In addition, consumers should monitor their bank statements closely, shred all unwanted financial documents and check the security of their computer when making purchases online, CIFAS suggests.

The organisation also reminded computer users to avoid giving out information on social networking websites, as personal details can be used by fraudsters.

According to a recent report from Sainsbury's Bank, this December will break records for the amount of money withdrawn from cash machines in the UK.
