A new report has revealed the full extent of the internet retail industry's seasonal boom.
With the festive shopping period already well underway, Apacs has stated that UK consumers will collectively spend over £5 billion online this Christmas.
The payments association said that the number of British adults using the internet to make purchases has more than doubled in the last five years and is now just short of 30 million.
"More and more of us are buying our Christmas presents online and the evidence suggests we like to do so about three weeks before the big day, to ensure they are delivered on time," commented Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs.
"The internet allows us to take the stress out of Christmas shopping, but it's important that people take steps to protect themselves," she added.
According to Apacs, next Monday (December 3rd) will be the busiest day for Christmas shopping online this year. The organisation urged consumers to take precautions when going online by only using secure websites and virus-protected computers.
Credit Action recently estimated that 27 million people will buy Christmas presents online this year.
