Irish gamblers tot up ?4bn a year

Wed 30 May 2007 12pm

Gamblers in Ireland are now spending more than ?3.6 billion on the pastime per year, a new report suggests.

According to research released at a conference in Dublin, the amount gambled in the country has soared from ?1.6 billion to the current figure in just five years.

What is more, these figures do not take into account the sums of money gambled on online betting sites or in casinos.

Critics claim this shows the addictive and potentially financially debilitating effect playing the lottery, buying scratch cards, betting on greyhound racing and fruit machines amongst other forms can have.

Indeed, gamblers appear to be starting at an increasingly young age - according to a 2006 national survey carried out by MORI and the International Gaming and Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University, 77 per cent of boys and 68 per cent of girls aged between 12 and 15 had gambled.

It is believed gambling began as far back as 2000 BC when Egyptians used knucklebones as four sided dice.
