Unusual bets on sporting events could face the referee's whistle and be banned in the future, it has emerged.
According to the Times, bets such as the number of players receiving a yellow card during a football match, or the number of corners being awarded may be banned, under new measures to curb cheating.
The Gambling Commission has announced plans to introduce tighter restrictions on the type of bets bookmakers are allowed to offer and accept.
The newspaper pointed to a consultation paper in which the GC asked whether it "should require the gambling industry to offer only certain categories of betting opportunities".
Representatives from football, rugby, tennis, cricket, rugby league and rugby union are now lobbying for the idea.
Yet they face fierce opposition from the betting industry, particularly from the Association of British Bookmakers, which told the Times that the measures were part of "a hidden commercial agenda" by sports.
