GMTV has pledged to reimburse viewers over
claims that it callers to its phone-in competitions were charged when they had no chance of winning a prize.
An investigation by BBC television programme Panorama found that viewers entering competitions on GMTV may have been wrongly charged more than £40 million.
GMTV has now admitted to "irregularities" in its premium rate phone line competitions following the allegations that many entrants had no chance of winning competitions, as winners were selected a long time before phone lines officially closed.
Paul Corley, managing director of GMTV, claimed to be "shocked and saddened" and issued a public apology on the show, but dismissed the suggestion that viewers had been conned out of £40 million as "nonsense".
According to Panorama, the alleged con has been going on for nearly four years and GMTV has now suspended its contract with premium rate phone services provider Opera Interactive Technology.
Several popular UK television programmes, including the Richard and Judy show and Blue Peter, have recently been at the centre of allegations that premium rate phone competitions were not operated fairly.
Premium rate phone regulator Icstis has now launched an investigation into the issue.
