The chief executive of the British Bankers' Association has issued some advice on how UK consumers can enjoy a financially healthy 2008.
Angela Knight said that everyone can be more careful with their money without making "radical changes" to their
lifestyle and suggested that, with the
credit crunch still having an impact on financial markets, saving has become even more important than usual.
Ms Knight urged people to check bank statements regularly in order to keep track of their spending and also stressed the importance of dealing with bills promptly.
She also advised consumers not to "overdo it" with
credit card purchases and recommended putting a bit more money aside in a savings account.
Finally, Ms Knight said that people who find themselves in financial difficulty should talk to their bank or an adviser "sooner rather than later".
"I believe that, with a bit of old-fashioned common sense and some much maligned prudence, we can enjoy 2008," she commented.
Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's Bank, recently urged Britons to review their finances at the start of the new year.
