Consumers have been advised to set a clear budget for their Christmas shopping and stick to it, or risk overspending on festive items.
Research from PayPal shows that just 38 per cent of UK people adhere to a Christmas budget, despite the fact that 86 per cent claim to be 'savvy shoppers' when buying presents and other seasonal goods.
As a result, the online payment service is urging British consumers to be smarter shoppers this December by making a list of planned purchases to avoid panic buys, staying within a realistic budget and shopping online to find bargains.
PayPal's shopping expert Cristina Hoole said: "Pre-planning who you are going to buy for and setting a budget are essential elements to ensure that you don't regret [overspending] in January.
"Many of the best deals can be found online, so those expensive treats you might be planning on buying for someone special could end up costing less than buying them on the high street."
Providing a secure method paying for goods over the internet, the PayPal service is now available in 17 different currencies.
