Debtors 'must research their options'

People with
debt problems must make sure that they fully understand their situation before taking action, a specialist firm has warned.
Debt counselling service Thomas Charles & Co advised consumers to do their own "groundwork" before signing up to a
debt management plan or individual voluntary arrangement.
Knowing what options are available and the level of their monthly expenditure will make it a lot easier for a person to organise a way of sorting out their
debts, the company's managing director James Falla said.
He explained: "The key thing
is to understand your own situation.
"When you have a problem, the last thing that you really want to do is to put it all down on paper. But it's very, very important."
Mr Falla also said that the wealth of information available via the internet should make it easy for consumers to research their situation.
Recent research carried out by Thomas Charles and YouGov found that 15 per cent of Britons currently have
debts of £10,000 or more.
