Brits 'depend on credit cards'

The UK is developing into a nation totally reliant on
credit card spending, new research has suggested.
According to findings from the Post Office, one in four British card holders are now more dependent on their plastic than they were at the start of 2007.
The survey discovered that overspending during the Christmas period has meant that people are particularly likely to resort to making purchases on
credit at the beginning of the year, with 41 per cent of people using their card to buy everyday items in January.
Gary Fitton, director of lending at the Post Office, said: "Typically January is the time of year when people struggle with their money the most.
"Many people have overstretched themselves over the Christmas period and have little choice but to use their
credit card in the new year."
Recent research by Abbey stated that over three billion people are planning to switch balances on their
credit cards in the early stages of 2008.
