Christmas shopping made "convenient" with cards

Credit cards provide a "convenient" and "flexible" way of shopping at Christmas, a financial expert has stated.
Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's Bank, said that using plastic to buy festive goods can also be a safer shopping option, as it means that people do not need to carry large amounts of cash around with them.
However, he also warned against overspending on
credit over the Christmas period and urged consumers to view the new year as an opportunity to review their borrowing habits and general financial health.
Commenting on the advantages of
credit cards, Mr MacLeod said: "They're very flexible, so if you see something that you really want to get somebody, then you have that flexibility there to do that."
He added that the beginning of 2008 should be used by people as "the time to review your finances and take advantage of what I think will be quite a lot of decent offers around in January".
According to a report from payments association Apacs, UK consumers spent £159.8 billion using plastic cards in 2006.
