With a large number of Britons still leaving their present-buying until the last minute, many are relying on
credit cards to carry the weight of their Christmas spending, according to new research.
The study by Sainsbury's Bank
claims that UK shoppers will spend a collective £11.85 billion in the week before Christmas, with the average British male shelling out £325.48 on gifts during the last seven days.
According to the findings, 18 per cent of this expenditure will be placed on plastic, with approximately 8.6 million people intending to make at least half of their Christmas purchases using
credit.
"Credit cards can be a safe and convenient way to do your Christmas shopping and some provide great rewards for using them," said Donald MacLeod, head of cards at Sainsbury's Bank.
"There are a number of
credit cards to choose from, all offering different terms and conditions, so it is important to ensure that you have the right one for you," he added.
A report from Apacs recently stated that over £5 billion will be spent online by shoppers in the UK this Christmas.
