Hidden card charges 'could spoil Christmas'

Tue 11 Dec 2007 2pm

The many Brits heading abroad this Christmas have been urged not to get caught out by hidden credit card fees.

Spending the festive period overseas is becoming increasingly popular among UK citizens, with 17 per cent planning to visit Spain this December and eight per cent crossing the Atlantic for Christmas in the US, according to the Post Office.

With the typical credit card charging 2.75 per cent on each transaction made in a foreign country, the Post Office has advised people not to use their plastic carelessly during their seasonal holiday.

"For many people, going abroad for Christmas is a great way to relax," said Gary Fitton, director of lending at the Post Office.

"However, with 49 per cent of UK holidaymakers planning to use their credit card when shopping abroad, many people could be returning from their Christmas break with a lot more than just memories and mementoes," he added.

According to a recent survey by Lloyds TSB, 64 per cent of the nation's homeowners plan to have a cheaper Christmas this year in order to cope with increased monthly mortgage payments.
