Shoppers have been advised to use their
credit cards when buying goods worth more than £100 online.
According to government advice service Consumer Direct, a section of the Consumer Credit Act makes
credit card companies jointly liable for these purchases and offers card users additional protection against identity fraud.
Stressing the importance of safe online shopping over the busy Christmas period, a spokesperson for the organisation advised consumers to keep their computers updated with the latest internet security software and only buy items from trustworthy websites.
"If you're concerned, check your bank and
credit card statements regularly and contact your bank immediately if you think your details have been disclosed," he added.
Earlier this year a report from the Office of Fair Trading stated that the internet shopping market in the UK is now worth over £21.4 billion, with more than 20 million Brits purchasing goods online last year.
