A mother-of-two has won her fight against a leading high street bank for the harassment she was forced to endure after going "a few pounds" overdrawn.
Alison Turner took out legal action against the Halifax in March after she underwent a constant stream of letters and phone calls from the bank hassling her about bank charges she supposedly owed, but had in fact been previously dropped.
Ms Turner, 31-years-old, said the continual haranguing for money she no longer owed, totalling £775, drove her to tears, anxiety and sleepless nights.
Now Halifax has agreed to an out-of-court settlement rumoured to be about £2,000.
The outcome has been welcomed by the financial ombudsmen and consumer groups who believe the case could set a precedent for other examples of wrongdoing by UK banks.
Commenting on the decision, a spokesman for the consumer watchdog Which? said: "This is another example of how people can keep challenging banks. It takes time and patience but it can be done."
Meanwhile a spokesperson for Halifax said: "We have no comment to make about the case other than to say it's been settled."
