A Newcastle woman who suffered brain damage after being hit by a speeding police car has been awarded £3.7 million in damages.
Linda Donaldson, 55, was crossing a road near her house when she was hit by a police car travelling at 40mph in a 30mph zone in 2002.
The patrol car was responding to a report of a teenager caught shoplifting when the incident occurred.
The mother of three suffered multiple fractures, internal bleeding and a blood clot on the brain after the incident which left her requiring round-the-clock care.
A Northumbria Police statement said: "Northumbria Police and the insurers and representatives for Mrs Donaldson have agreed the basis for a full and final settlement. However, this needs to be formally approved by the court."
The police officer responsible for the crash admitted dangerous driving and was given a six-month suspended sentence and four-year driving ban.
He was later sacked by Northumbria Police.
