Bad weather leads to major insurance bill

Tue 22 Jan 2008 5pm

A new survey has revealed the cost of severe weather conditions for UK homeowners and insurance firms.

Research from Abbey shows that 11 per cent of the nation's houses have been damaged by bad weather in the last five years, with the average cost currently standing at £2,699.

In addition, the survey found that five per cent of weather damage in Britain occurs within homes, such as when water leaks into a property as a result of dislodged tiles or a broken roof.

"Bad weather damage is a costly inconvenience and for some people, especially in flood areas, it is becoming a yearly nightmare," said Lloyd Wilson, head of product development at Abbey Home Insurance.

"The British weather is highly unpredictable but we can all ensure that, should the worst happen, we are correctly insured," he added.

A series of weather warnings were issued by the Met Office recently as heavy rain continues to batter parts of the UK. Snow is also expected in areas of northern England and Scotland this week.
