Insurer raises awareness of kitchen safety

People have been urged to take more care in the kitchen by an insurance firm, due to new figures which reveal the hazards of careless cooking.According to data from the fire service and Halifax Home Insurance's claim records, there are over 84 kitchen fires in UK homes each day, costing householders a collective £280 million.
The typical fire causes over £9,000 worth of damage, with 88 per cent of kitchen blazes caused by the misuse of appliances.
"It's great to see TV stars getting the nation excited about cooking, but we are urging people who do take it up as a hobby to take extra care in the kitchen," said David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance.
According to the insurer, the popularity of celebrity chefs on television has led to a greater number of kitchen accidents in the UK.
Tonight (January 18th) on Channel 4, Gordon Ramsey will attempt to lead the nation in a live 'cookalong', guiding viewers through the preparation of a three-course meal step-by-step.
