Card holders advised to deal with debt in January

Tue 22 Jan 2008 5pm

It is not too late for people to make a new year's resolution to sort out their credit card debt, an industry expert has claimed.

Head of cards at Sainsbury's Bank Donald MacLeod urged card holders to view the first month of 2008 as an opportunity to reassess their financial situation and tackle any problems that may have emerged from Christmas overspending.

Noting that now is the time when many consumers will be receiving their credit card bill after the festive period, Mr MacLeod advised people to set themselves up for the next 12 months by reorganising their money and taking advantage of the many good deals available at this time of the year.

He said: "Now is the time of year to sit down and look at your finances.

"Appraise where you are and see if there's a better way of handling that debt - look at loans, look at restructuring."

British people used credit cards for approximately 18 per cent of their Christmas purchases, a previous report from Sainsbury's Bank stated.
